If your employer nixes non-work-related sites like Gmail, YouTube, and Facebook, you could try bypassing the blocks with a public proxy -- but those are typically blacklisted, too.

This article is a wiki. Got extra advice? Log in and add it.

Here's how to forge your own detour:

Download the PHProxy program from Sourceforge.net.

Unzip the file and upload the entire folder's contents to a Web host that can run PHP scripts (GoDaddy and Dreamhost offer plans for less than $10 a month).

Enter the host URL into your browser. When the proxy page pops up, type your actual destination into the blank address bar.

You're now free -- and free to poke away.

Use an SSH Server on port 443

Your corporate proxy knows nothing about what goes on over SSL/HTTPS connections. They simply allow any TCP connection to port 443 of any IP not blacklisted. So you run an SSH server on port 443 and connect to that to tunnel all your real connections.

If you are using your home internet connection for this, simply go into your router and port forward 443 to port 22 (the normal SSH port) of your computer. If you have a Mac, turn on remote administrator access in "sharing" and you'll be good to go. Or use a dedicated server you may have hired at a colo; Linux firewall rules can forward port 443 to 22 also. If someone knows how to run an SSH server on Windows, please add it here.

On your work computer, find out the IP address of the proxy. You'll likely find this in the connection settings for IE. You may have to download the "PAC" file it references to work out the rules.

Download PuTTY. In "Connection", add the proxy you just discovered as HTTP proxy. The proxy may require your username and password, usually in "domain\user" form. Then in "Connection>SSH>Tunnels" enter 8181 for source port, leave destination empty and select the "Dynamic" radio button and click add. Go back to "Session" and save this session.

Now try and open this session and see if you are in luck. If you are, you log into your server and the tunnel will be active.

Now all you need to do is change your browser to use "localhost:8181" as SOCKS proxy. Stuck on a locked down IE? FireFox installs just fine in your "Documents and Settings" folder without the need to admin rights on your computer.

If the connection failed, it could be that your company use Microsoft's proxy and it requires NTLM authentication, which PuTTY doesn't provide. In that case, download "ntlmaps" which sits between PuTTY and the proxy and takes care of the NTLM authentication.

This is not a step by step guide because the details will be slightly different for everyone. Work it out and prove you are a geek!

Yes, it's a lot of work but I have never not been able to escape the confines of any company, nor has any network security group detected this was happening. YMMV!

Disclaimer

When executing this work around you are essentially creating a back door into the company's network that is bypassing your companies content policies. For those of you that feel comfortable doing that, have at--but be aware of following sage advice.

If you work for a company that has industry regulated security compliance standards, like PCI, or the company has its own security polices, you could be putting your job/career at risk using this technique. Employees at a variety of corporate venues both large and small have been terminated for even a single breach of corporate content policies. You may even be violating the law, particularly if you work in the Banking or Defense industry. Read your company's employee handbook, particularly those sections related to IT policies, before pursuing any of the above work around.

Many companies log internet activity, and some have HTTPS inspection. This means that your HTTPS (TCP 443) data is decrypted, inspected, logged and re-encrypted by a firewall. Inspection of decrypted port 443 traffic, typically blocks non-http traffic (e.g. SSH over port 443) this renders such an attempt to bypass your companies security, invalid. You can detect SSL inspection by browsing to a site you trust and checking what certicate authority issued the certificate, then viewing the same site at home. Some Cisco firewall, Forefront TMG, and ISA (with addition of addons) offer this feature to your IT department.

Even if its legal, even you found some loophole in the employee handbook, even if you don't get caught by the company IT department, or they are simply "asleep at the switch", and even you restrict your web surfing to lunch time and breaks, you'll prove you are a geek all right--and the loser who does nothing all day but look at Facebook/EBay/etc. to any co-worker that happens to walk by your computer the moment you browsing to a site they know you to which you aren't suppose to have access.

You would be well advised to just surf from home and keep your job, or get cell phone or other wireless device that has web-browsing capabilities and head down to the local coffee shop to find out if your grape harvest is ready in FarmVille.

How To Play Your Games In ‘Real’ 3D (Windows)

Every gamer must’ve imagined it at one time or another – putting on a helmet and suit, and being in the game. WYSIWYG-gaming. Everything really happening. Everything truly being done by you. You’ll even experience real pain when being hit or shot.

Unfortunately we haven’t progressed that far yet. We’re steadily moving in the right direction and sooner or later we’ll get there, mark my words. I can only hope my (then) ‘old bones’ will allow me to use it when the moment has arrived.

But the time isn’t there yet, and so we just have to work with the things we have. There are a lot of great things out there if you know where to look that can approach this virtual reality gaming pretty good. We’ve got the NOVINT Falcon controller, electric shock inhibitors, and of course the great graphics of the current-gen games.

Stereoscopic Gaming

Another one of those great things is the GeForce 3D Vision. This program – that runs on Windows and NVIDIA GPUs – will allow you to play your games in 3D.

Not just the common 3D that we encounter in all games nowadays, mind. Do you remember those goofy 3D goggles with one eye blue/green and one eye red? Yeah, that 3D.

What Anaglyphs Are

For those of you who have never heard before of the concept of anaglyphs or stereoscopical vision, I’ll briefly explain it. If your interest is peaked, you can always Google for more information on this subject.

Anaglyphs are 3D situations (defined by height, width and depth) that are put into a 2D picture (defined by height and width). They are made by merging two slightly different points of view into one image, using two superimposed color layers.

Without, they only give you headaches, but if you view these anaglyphs through anaglyph filters (a.k.a. “goofy goggles”), each eye will see only one of those layers. The brain then decodes these two separate images – like it’s doing all day long – into the 3D vision that we all know.

How To Set Up Anaglyphic Gaming

We are going to use GeForce 3D Vision, an NVIDIA application. You’ll need Windows and an NVIDIA graphical processing unit (8000 series, or later).

There are also various ATI GPUs that support stereographic gaming by default. You can search for these on Google.

The supported operating systems are Windows XP (limited to 32bit) and Windows Vista (supported by both the 32bit and the 64bit version).

1. Update Your Current Drivers

Make sure to install the latest GeForce drivers before proceeding. At the time of writing this is version 181.22

2. Install GeForce 3D Vision and Apply Registry Patch

When you’ve got your drivers up to date, download and install NVIDIA GeForce 3D Vision.

Next, we need to apply a registry patch. You can download it here (alternative link). This patch activates the output of anaglyph images.

To apply a registry patch, you just need to open the file.

3. (optional) Change The Anaglyph Filter Type

There are several different anaglyph filters. For instance, we can use the default red-cyan glasses, but also red-blue, red-green, and even yellow-blue filters exist.

To change the anaglyph filter type, we need to apply another registry patch.

To return to the default Red-Cyan filter setup, you need to download and run this registry patch (alternative link) and reinstall NVIDIA GeForce 3D Vision.

4. Activate Stereoscopic Vision

Last but not least, we need to activate the stereoscopic vision. Open the NVIDIA Control Panel, and activate it in the Stereo tab.

That’s it! You’re all set up now, and ready to begin your 3D gaming session!

The Ideal Environment

It’s best to do this is a dark room, sitting right in front of your screen. If the images don’t look right, it’s probably because you’re using too light a room, looking at your screen from too big an angle, or are using the wrong color filters.

HelloOX - Symbian Hack Method (fully working)

This method fully works on all Symbian 9.1,9.2 & 9.4 devices including Nokia N96,N78,Nokia 5800 and all others released till date

Please Note this tutorial is for Dummies who don't know much about Hacking the symbian phone.

Step 1: Getting The Certificate

First you need to goto following url: http://cer.s603rd.cn/

(Website is in complete chinese so look at Screenshot below).

Enter your Phones IMEI number and enter whatever the security code is on the rightside, and Click the Button.

Now you will have to wait 24 Hours and allow the website prepare your certificate in this time.

After 24 Hours come back to this site again http://cer.s603rd.cn/ and enter your IMEI number and security code and press button just like you did first. Now you will see two Buttons as shown in screenshot below:

Once you see this button and click it, you will be able to download your Certficiate. (Dummies: A Certificate is like a Security Keyfile which is required to Sign an unsigned application to work on your phone).

Now make sure you have saved this Cert file on your PC. (Now save this cert file in a safe place, so whenever you install a new software application, you will need this cert file to Sign the application).

Move on to step 2.

Step 2: Hacking You Phone using HelloOX

Now download the HelloOX 1.03 from this link:

a) Make sure you have downloaded HelloOX1.03 file in your PC. Now use the PCSign application to Sign the unsigned "HelloOX.1.03.Unsigned". (screenshot below)

Once you have signed the HelloOx1.03 a new file e.g. HelloOX.1.03_signed_by_dify.sis will be generated in that folder.

Now install the Signed HelloOX on your phone it will take a about 1-2 mins to install. Once installed your phone is fully hacked!

Wolla! you have done it.

Step 3:

Now simply you just have to sign every application you want to install on your phone. Just run PC Sign app, browse the appilication which you want to sign, browse the cert and press Sign button.

Now a new Signed app file will appear in the folder, copy and install that file on your phone.

1.this is for those who have physical access to A comp.(computer).
first obtain a copy of ophcrack at http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/download.php (just copy paste) get it as a live cd. then you dont have to install anything. next make the live cd by burning the iso. to a cd
i would use img burn at http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download copy paste
use burn an img to cd .

2. after that when your TARGET has left the room or has gone some place you could shutdown the computer.
(or turn it on)!!!!set the comp to boot to a cd.(key: you should know)insert the live cd in the cd application drive. (the disc tray).then shutdown comp and reboot it. it should then boot into a linux distro and open ophcrack it will then crack the LM hashes.
after a while you shouild have the admin's password!!!!

3.got to your comp and get ultravnc found at http://www.uvnc.com/download/ copy paste.
install viewer only. then go to the Targets comp and install silent server or server only "(silent)".hide the files deep into there system DONT NOT PUT IT INTO STARTUP folder.
i put the ultra vnc server file into the anti virus folder :0 lol
also dont have a desktop icon.

20% Faster Internet Connection

A nice little tweak for XP. Microsoft reserve 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes (suspect for updates and interrogating your machine etc..)

Here's how to get it back:

Click Start-->Run-->type "gpedit.msc" without the "

This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:

Local Computer Policy-->Computer Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->Network-->QOS Packet Scheduler-->Limit Reservable Bandwidth

Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth.

"By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."

So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.

This made my net connection fast as hell.

In Egypt in the study, one of the tombs will be filled with rubble to be cleared in order for them to find the switch that will open another passage. Sim with athletic skills, will make it faster. 8. Now, send this file to your victim and make him to install this binded keylogged file on his computer (Social engineering). You can crypt this keylogger file and then use Fake error message generator to make our keylogger undetectable by antivirus.

Once the victim installs keylogger on his computer, you will start receiving all typed passwords on his computer in your FTP server account (in logs folder). Thus, our target of hacking hotmail, yahoo, msn account password accomplished.

Hot Wire Your Car

Nine times out of ten, the term "hot-wire" summons images of car theft. Of course, anyone who's been stranded in a hostile environment without their car keys knows better. Here's the trick to getting your vehicle moving again.

It's not pretty, but a screwdriver can save you some trouble.

If you're considering hot-wiring your car, chances are you're already in dire straits. Before making things worse by removing the ignition cover and making a general mess of your vehicle, it might be worth trying the old "screwdriver in the ignition" trick. All this calls for is inserting a slotted screwdriver in the ignition and turning it over like a regular key. If the car starts, you've saved yourself the hassle and electrical hazards of hot-wiring.

No such luck? Don't fret. You'll still need the screwdriver for the following steps. Just be sure not to get it stuck in the ignition cylinder.

Remove the ignition cover

Before continuing, be sure to exercise extreme caution. The following steps can result in painful electrical shocks, so follow the instructions carefully.

The first step is to gain access to the wiring. Most cars have large plastic panels that snap together and cover the top and bottom of the steering column. You'll want to carefully remove these panels so that the cylinder (and the wires running into it) are exposed. At some point you'll want to put these pieces back together, so be sure to use a feather touch while separating them.

Identify the battery and starter wires

You'll typically see three pairs of wires running into the back of the cylinder. Don't freak out -- each pair just represents a different key position on the ignition. In short, one pair should trigger the battery-only position, another pair the lights and radio position, etc. Of course, this also means one pair is responsible for the final key position -- starting the car.

Here's where it gets tricky. Everything you need is laid out in front of you, but there's no universal color system for the wires. Consulting your car's manual is probably the best way to find out your vehicle's specific color code. However, in a pinch the red pair is usually the set that provides power to the car, and the brown (which can be a single wire or a pair depending on the car) handles the starter.

Strip and connect the power wires

Once you've located the wires that provide power to the car, disconnect them from the cylinder. Use the wire stripper to remove the plastic from the ends and then twist them together. The fruits of your labor should be obvious -- power to the dashboard, lights, and pretty much everything else in the car.

Connect the starter wires to the power wires

Now things get dangerous. Although connecting the power wires is relatively safe, the wires responsible for starting the car carry live current. Under no circumstances should you touch the bare starter wires! With that in mind, strip the insulation off the ends of the wires and carefully touch them together. You should see a spark and hear the engine fire up. Once it's started idling, separate and cover the ends of the starter wires. They still pose an electrical hazard even after the vehicle has started, and you don't want them dangling around your knees.

TIP: This process may be slightly different for older cars. If you discover that the vehicle has a single starter wire (as opposed to a pair), you'll want to disconnect and handle the wire in the same fashion mentioned above. To start the car, the starter wire must come in contact with the connected power wires. Once the engine has started, remove the starter wire from the circuit and cover its exposed tip.

Things to consider

Hot-wiring is illegal if you don't own the car, so have your ID and registration (or some other proof of ownership) handy. If you are helping out a friend, that person must be able to prove ownership and must remain with you during the entire process.

Many cars have a mechanism that locks the steering wheel unless a key is in the ignition. So, even if you get the car started without a key, you may not be able to turn the steering wheel.

If you're not sure you know what you're doing, don't even start. You can do serious, hard-to-troubleshoot (in other words, expensive) damage to wiring and other components if you accidentally ground (or power) the wrong circuit.

Newer cars have a computer chip in the ignition system that requires a matching key. Most of them have an RFID chip that works when in proximity to the steering column. Without a key, these cars cannot be hot-wired. If your key does not turn the mechanical locks, simply taping it to the steering column may enable you to hot-wire the car.

Slightly older cars have resistors at very precise resistances (such as 11.7ohms) built in to the keys. These need to be matched with a value stored in the car's memory to start the car. After a few (typically 3) mismatched resistances, the ECU will lock out the ignition.

Note: As a rule of thumb you should not touch bare electrical wires, but in this case it won't do you any harm. The battery can provide hundreds of amps (known as cranking amps) to start the engine, but it supplies them at only 12V. A voltage that low can't push sufficient current through you to hurt (this is why you can hold 12V camera batteries in your bare hands without any problem) - This due to the "breakdown voltage" of skin, as is between 30v and 48v DC. But if your hands are wet, touching the wires is a very bad idea, as is applying the power beneath the skin (there is a story somewhere on the Web of someone sticking multimeter pins into his thumbs and electrocuting himself).

The real problem arises if you short the battery across a piece of metal. A battery can supply as much current as a welder, hence the story on the Web of a guy who was working on his car and dropped a spanner, shorting the battery to the car and welding his wedding ring to the chassis. Combined with the hydrogen gas generated, and you can have an explosive situation.

Below are a few of our favorite Firefox performance hacks, tweaks, and productivity enhancements that can be made via the About:config of Firefox. We show you step-by-step how to perform the tweaks and what each of the tweaks are responsible for and how they improve your performance in Firefox and increase your productivity.

Make Firefox Give Back RAM When Minimized
Typically when a program in Windows is minimized for a period of time, the program will give back the RAM that it used so that users of the system can use the memory for other applications that may be running. By default, Firefox does not perform in this matter, making your system run lower on RAM than it should.

To enable the setting so that Firefox gives back RAM, do the following:

1) In the Firefox address bar type: about:config and then hit Enter.
2) In the "Filter" search, type: config.trim_on_minimize
3) Right click on the setting and click "toggle" so that the Value turns to "true".

After performing the above, you will need to restart the browser and Firefox will now "give back RAM" when minimized. To undo the change, perform the steps again but make sure the value turns to "false".

Hacking Firefox Network Settings for Performance
HTTP is the protocol used for most web pages today and multiple requests can be sent before any responses are received in your browser, and this is known as pipelining. Pipelining reduces network load and can reduce page loading times, but the downside is that not all servers support the feature. For the servers that do support it, this setting could drastically improve the loading speed of pages in Firefox.

To enable the settings for network pipelining, do the following:

1) In the Firefox address bar type: about:config and then hit Enter.
2) In the "Filter" search, type: pipelining.

You should see the following:

network.http.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
network.http.pipelining.ssl
network.http.proxy.pipelining

Set the first option to: true and second option to: 8. The SSL option you can set to true, if you want to use pipelining for secure sites and if you are using a proxy, you'll want to set the fourth option to true as well to benefit from pipelining using a proxy server.

Yet another network feature that can be tweaked is the maximum number of connections by server, and in total that are allowed at any given time. Users on slower connections may want to reduce this number to help prevent HTTP connection timeouts. Users on faster connections may want to increase it. Below are the settings that I use.

To enable the setting so that Firefox uses more connections at once, do the following:

1) In the Firefox address bar type: about:config and then hit Enter.
2) In the "Filter" search, type: max-connections

You should see the following:

network.http.max-connections
network.http.max-connections-per-server

I have the first setting set to 45 and the last setting set to 30. If you are on a slower connection, the default or lower would be better.

Graphics Rendering and UI Hacks
Firefox readers web pages incrementally - they display what's been received of a page before the entire page has been downloaded completely. Since the very start of the page usually contains only meta information, css, javascript and simply doesn't have much useful information to display, Firefox will wait a short interval before rendering a page and this next setting controls that interval. The default is set to 250 milliseconds and we're going to change it to 0 so that the page renders as soon as possible.

To enable the settings for faster page rendering, do the following:

1) In the Firefox address bar type: about:config and then hit Enter.
2) In the configuration window, right click and choose New -> Integer
3) Name it nglayout.initialpaint.delay and set it to 0

Rather than wait until a page has completely downloaded to display it to the user, Mozilla applications will periodically render what has been received to that point. Because reflowing the page every time additional data is received greatly slows down total page load time, a timer was added so that the page would not reflow too often. This preference controls the maximum number of times the content will do timer-based reflows. After this number has been reached, the page will only reflow once it is finished downloading.

To enable this setting do the following:

1) In the Firefox address bar type: about:config and then hit Enter.
2) In the "Filter" search, type: content.notify.backoffcount
3) Double click on content.notify.backoffcount and change the Value to 5.

Based on the previous feature, content notify interval is a setting that allows us to set the minimum amount of time to wait between reflows.

To add this functionality perform the following:

1) In the Firefox address bar type: about:config and then hit Enter.
2) In the configuration window, right click and choose New -> Integer
3) Name it content.notify.interval and set it to 849999

Content interrupt parsing is another area that can be tweaked and this setting controls whether or not Firefox will interrupt parsing a page to respond to UI events.

To add this functionality perform the following:

1) In the Firefox address bar type: about:config and then hit Enter.
2) In the configuration window, right click and choose New -> Boolean
3) Name it content.interrupt.parsing and set it to "True"

Hate when unintelligent webmasters utilize the blink HTML tag and blink value in CSS causing content to blink on a web page? You can now disable this behavior with the next trick.

To add or remove this functionality perform the following:

1) In the Firefox address bar type: about:config and then hit Enter.
2) In the "Filter" search, type: browser.blink_allowed
3) Right click on the setting and click "toggle" so that the Value turns to "false". This disables the blinking.

Firefox menu's display slowly? Speed them up with this next tweak:

1) In the Firefox address bar type: about:config and then hit Enter.
2) In the configuration window, right click and choose New -> Integer
3) Name it ui.submenuDelay and set it to 0

This is a cool productive feature that allows your middle click on your mouse to paste content from the clipboard into text fields in Firefox.

To enable the middle mouse click as a paste feature, performing following:

1) In the Firefox address bar type: about:config and then hit Enter.
2) In the "Filter" search, type: middlemouse.paste
3) Right click on the setting and click "toggle" so that the Value turns to "true".

Now on to one of my favorite Firefox tweaks, displaying search results in a new tab. I always hated how Firefox would use my existing tabs, when I used the search feature built in Firefox. Now, with the setting below it will open a new tab with the results, leaving my previous tabs untouched.

Here is how to do it:

1) In the Firefox address bar type: about:config and then hit Enter.
2) In the "Filter" search, type: browser.search.openintab
3) Right click on the setting and click "toggle" so that the Value turns to "true".

Now for the granddaddy of all features, the ability to have the "View Source Code" in Firefox, open in the text editor of your choice. To do this, follow the steps below:

1) In the Firefox address bar type: about:config and then hit Enter.
2) In the "Filter" search, type: view_source.editor and you should see the following:

view_source.editor.external
view_source.editor.path

Change the first setting to "true" and change the last setting to the full path of your text editor. Now you can enjoy firefox opening source code of web pages in your favorite text editor.

You may have installed countless add-on in Firefox to enhance your using experience, but if you want to get the most out of Firefox, you really have to hack your way into the about:config.

The about:config page contains most (if not, all) of Firefox configuration options. It is so far the most effective, and the most powerful way to tweak and enhance your Firefox performance. Here are 28 of the popular tweaks.

Accessing your about:config page

In your Firefox, type about:config in the address bar.

You will be shown a warning page. Click the “I’ll be careful, I promise!” button to proceed.

On the main page, you will see a long list of configuration entries. Enter the name of the key you want to update in the “Filter” field. The list will narrow to only the entries that match your keyword as you type.

To modify the value, simply double click on the entry value field and update the entry. That’s all!

Isn’t that simple? Now, let’s get to the tweaking.

1) Adjust the Smart Location Bar’s Number of Suggestions

In Firefox 3, when you start typing in the location bar, a drop-down list of suggestion URLs will be shown. If you want it to show more than 12 suggestions (12 is the default), you can adjust the browser.urlbar.maxRichResults keys and get it to show the number you want.

Config name: browser.urlbar.maxRichResults
Default: 12
Modified value: Set to your desired number of suggestion. If you want to disable it all together, set it to -1

2) Disable the session restore function

Firefox 3 automatically saves your session every 10 secs so that whenever it crashes, it can restore all your tabs. While this is a useful feature, some of you might find it irritating. To disable this function, toggle the value of browser.sessionstore.enabled to False

Config name: browser.sessionstore.enabled
Default: True
Modified value: False if you want to disable the session restore function

3) Adjust the Session Restore Saving Frequency

Same as above, if you decided to keep the session restore feature on, but want to reduce the session saving frequency, change the value of browser.sessionstore.interval so that Firefox will save the session at a longer interval.

Config name: browser.sessionstore.interval
Default: 10000 (in msecs, equivalent to 10secs)
Modified value: Set it to your desired value. 1000 means 1 sec and 60000 means 1 minute.

4) Enable Advanced Color Profile Support

Firefox has this advanced color profile features that display higher image quality. It is not enabled by default as it has a negative effect on the performance of the browser. If you are concern with the image quality rather than the performance, you can activated it via the gfx.color_management.enabled setting

Config name: gfx.color_management.enabled
Default: False
Modified value: True (if you want to activate the color profile support feature)

5) Disable Antivirus Scanning

This is mainly for Windows users. By default, Firefox 3 automatically scan the downloaded file with the default anti-virus application to make sure it is free of virus. If you download a big file, it could take a long time for the whole scanning process to complete. To increase the performance of the browser, you might want to consider disabling the anti-virus scanning via the browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone key.

Config name: browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone
Default: True
Modified value: False (if you want to disable it)

6) Configuring The Scrolling Tabs

When you opened many tabs, Firefox will not keep on reducing the tab width. Instead, it shows a scrolling bar so that the min width (100px) is conserved and you can scroll to find your tabs. If you are those who don’t like the scrolling tab function and prefer Firefox to show all the tabs, regardless how small it is, you can set the value of browser.tabs.tabMinWidth to 0 to disable it. Similarly, if you want Firefox to display more tabs before showing the scrolling button, you can reduce the default value to a lower value, say 75 pixels.

Config name: browser.tabs.tabMinWidth
Default: 100
Modified value: 0 if you want to disable the scrolling functions, other values to set the min width value

Some people love to see the Close (the red X) button on every tabs, but some hate it. Whatever is it, you can configure it to your preferences via the browser.tabs.closeButtons setting.

8) Extend Scripts Execution Time

In Firefox 3, a script is only given 10 seconds to respond, after which it will issue a unresponsive script warning. If you are hooked on a slow network connection, you might want to increase the script execution time via dom.max_script_run_time to cut down on the frequency of the no script warning.

9) Handling JavaScript Popups

When you come across a site that executes a javascript open new window function, and if the popup window is without all the usual window features, i.e. back/forward/reload buttons, status bar etc, Firefox will automatically treat it as a popup and will not open it as a new tab. However, if you find this to be a nuisance and wanted to open all new windows in a new tabs, you can specify it via the browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction setting.

The default spell checking function only checks for multi-line text boxes. You can get it to spell-check for single line text box as well.

11) Open Search Box Results In New Tab

12) Lower The Physical Memory Used When Minimized

This tweak is mainly for Windows users. When you minimize Firefox, it will send Firefox to your virtual memory and free up your physical memory for other programs to use. Firefox will reduce its physical memory usage, when minimized, to approximately 10MB (give or take some) and when you maximize Firefox it will take back the memory that it needs.

The preference name does not exist and needs to be created.

Right click on the background and select New->Boolean.

Enter the name when prompted: config.trim_on_minimize

14) Increase/Decrease the Amount of Disk Cache

When a page is loaded, Firefox will cache it into the hard disk so that it doesn’t need to be download again for redisplaying. The bigger the storage size you cater for Firefox, the more pages it can cache.

Before you increase the disk cache size, make sure that browser.cache.disk.enabled browser.cache.disk.enable is set to True.

15) Select all text when click on the URL bar

In Windows and Mac, Firefox highlights all text when you click on the URL bar. In Linux, it does not select all the text. Instead, it places the cursor at the insertion point. Regardless which platform you are using, you can now tweak it to either select all or place cursor at insertion point.

21) Auto Export Firefox 3 bookmarks to bookmarks.html

Unlike the previous version, Firefox 3 backup the bookmarks file in places.sqlite rather than the usual bookmarks.html. Since bookmarks.html allows us to export and sync our bookmarks with other browser, it will be very useful if Firefox 3 can backup the bookmark to the bookmarks.html as well.

22) Disable Extension Compatibility Checks

This is useful if you want to use an extension that is not supported by your version of Firefox badly. It is not recommended, but you can still do it at your own risk.

Right click again and select New->Boolean. Enter extensions.checkUpdateSecurity into the field and enter False into the next field.

23) Disable Delay Time When Installing Add-on

Everytime you wanted to install a Firefox add-on, you will have to wait for several secs before the actual installation starts. If you are tired of waiting, you can turn the function security.dialog_enable_delay off so that the installation will start immediately upon clicking.

25) Increasing ‘Save Link As‘ timeout value

When you right click and select the ‘Save Link As…‘, the browser will request the content disposition header from the URL so as to determine the filename. If the URL did not deliver the header within 1 sec, Firefox will issue a timeout value. This could happen very frequently in a slow network connection environment. To prevent this issue from happening frequently, you can increase the timeout value so as to reduce the possibility of a timeout.

26) Animate Fullscreen Toolbar Collapse mode

In Firefox’s fullscreen mode, toolbars and the tab strip are hidden at the top of the screen and only shown on mouseover. To draw attention to this, there is an animation of the toolbar sliding upwards and off-screen when fullscreen mode is toggled on. For performance issue, the animation of the collapse of the toolbar only appear for the first time. For some reason that you may love/hate the animation, you can adjust Browser.fullscreen.animateUp to switch it on/off for every collapse.

27) Autohide Toolbar in Fullscreen mode

Google Chrome vs IE8 vs Firefox 3.1

Now the initial surprise has worn off, it's time to ask the big questions about Google's new browser: is it any good? And how does it compare to its rivals? To find out, we've been running it alongside the two big browsers, IE8 beta 2 and a pre-release version of Firefox 3.1 (the Minefield build) with the new TraceMonkey JavaScript engine enabled.

On the face of it, all three browsers are excellent - but there are big differences in the way they do things, and even bigger differences in the strain they can put on your system. We benchmarked all three programs on a 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo machine packing 2GB of RAM and Windows Vista Ultimate - but as that's a fairly speedy machine we also blew the dust off our trusty and desperately underpowered Acer Aspire to see how they coped on that.

Wherever possible we've compared like with like, and for the sake of clarity we'll avoid terms such as "OmniBox" (Chrome) or "Awesome Bar" (Firefox) when we're comparing different browsers' address bars. We believe in calling a spade a spade, not an OmniShovel or MegaSpade.

Usability
WINNER: CHROME

There's been a lot of talk about Chrome's minimalist appearance, but it doesn't make that much difference to the amount of space the browser actually takes up. Disable Firefox's and IE's status bars - Chrome doesn't have one - and Chrome's header is a half-tab shorter than IE and the same size as Firefox. Had Google gone for something other than THE WORLD'S BIGGEST FONT in the address bar, the difference would have been more pronounced.

In fact, Chrome's slight space advantage disappears completely when you maximise it. Its address bar and tabs remain at the top of the screen, whereas in full screen mode IE8 and Firefox get rid of absolutely everything.

One thing Chrome has done is simplified the traditional combination of address bar and search bar. Instead, you use the same box to type URLs and search criteria; if it's the latter, Chrome comes up with some helpful suggestions. IE8 does the same but keeps a separate search box just in case, while Firefox sticks with URLs and previously visited pages in the address bar and search suggestions in the search bar.

That doesn't mean Chrome doesn't have some nifty tricks. Click on the spanner icon and choose History to see a Google-style list of the pages you've visited along with a prominent search box for finding exactly what you want, and when you create a new tab there's an Opera-style collection of nine thumbnails to show you your most commonly visited sites along with your most recently added bookmarks. We particularly liked the ability to delete a particular day's browsing history without getting rid of everything else, and the ability to resize on-screen text input boxes is brilliant.

As with Firefox and IE you can re-arrange open tabs by dragging them around, but Chrome also enables you to drag a tab over the desktop. Firefox does this too, but where Firefox then saves the page as a link Chrome opens it as a new browser window. We prefer Chrome's approach.

It's not all good, though. Bookmark management is non-existent, Chrome doesn't appear to know what an RSS feed is let alone offer any features to deal with one, and where IE and Firefox can zoom in and out of entire web pages Chrome merely makes the text bigger or smaller while leaving images intact.

Expandability
WINNER: FIREFOX

There's no doubt that Firefox is the Swiss Army Knife of the internet, boasting an unrivalled collection of extensions and themes - although to be fair, IE is catching up with a decent collection of Toolbars and Extensions in the Internet Explorer Gallery. With Chrome, expandability is limited to the usual content plugins - Flash, Acrobat, Silverlight and so on. Extensions are on the to-do list.

Although Firefox is king of the extensions, IE8 has a few interesting ideas built into the browser. Its Accelerators are plugins that essentially bring the power of web services to the context menu so, for example, if you right-click on a link you can choose to blog it, email it, translate it and so on. It's context-sensitive, so some content will give you the ability to define text with Encarta or map an address with Live Maps. Firefox gets something similar via the impressive Ubiquity add-on, but with IE the basic features are already in the browser.

IE also gets Web Slices, which enable you to subscribe to part of a web page - designer permitting - and make it pop out of the Favorites bar without actually visiting the page. We're not entirely sure how useful this is, but it does look nice.

Chrome comes with Google Gears built-in, and that's much more interesting than Web Slices. Gears enables web services such as Google Docs to run offline as well as online, and while Gears is available for everything from Windows to mobile phones (as well as Firefox and IE) it's nice to have it in the browser from the get-go. It's not just useful for Google's own services, although of course that's why it's there; platforms such as WordPress can also use Gears to speed things up. With Chrome, you can save web applications as desktop shortcuts and open them without all the browser buttons, making them look much the same as standard desktop applications - although you'll need to enable their offline modes if you want to use them when you're not connected.

Performance
WINNER: CHROME

For everyday browsing, Chrome feels quicker and snappier - but when we compared each browser's launch times and load times for the same set of web pages there wasn't a substantial difference on our Core 2 Duo machine. On our ancient laptop, however, Chrome was noticeably faster - and we can't wait to try the Mac version, because Firefox on OS X eventually gets so depressed it kills itself.

We decided to benchmark each browser by running the Sunspider JavaScript tests, which attempt to measure real-world JavaScript performance, and we also recorded the memory footprint of each browser with one tab open and with ten. The results were interesting, to say the least.

There's no doubt that Chrome gave IE8 a spanking, but it actually lagged behind Firefox. We ran the benchmarks again just to make sure.

Then we loaded up a collection of ten different websites - blogs, news sites, YouTube, Google Mail and so on - and measured each browser's memory footprint. The results were:

With a single open tab IE was once again the hungriest, but this time we found Chrome's footprint to be positively titchy, with little difference between Firefox and IE.

Although we didn't find any significant difference in load times or page rendering times on our test machine, that's probably because it has a Windows Experience Index of 5.5 and can run Crysis without bursting into tears. Things are very different on a less powerful machine, as we discovered when we blew the dust off our laptop - a machine with an Experience Index of 2.2 and less horsepower than a badger. This time, the differences were dramatic.

From a cold boot Chrome was the fastest to launch, although Firefox was slightly faster to render its first, uncached, page - although quitting the browsers and restarting them erased these differences, with both Chrome and Firefox launching in two to three seconds. We'll come back to IE in a moment.

NB - the benchmark below is a corrected version of the earlier published benchmark. An error in the previously published test showed Chrome outperforming Firefox. TechRadar apologises for the error.

Once again, we ran Sunspider twice, and the gap between Chrome and Firefox was significant.

As you can see, on our underpowered PC Firefox performed even better than Chrome. And IE? Where Chrome and Firefox installed simply and quickly, IE decided to waste an entire morning mucking us about. After a lengthy installation procedure we were told that the install had failed, and the Microsoft support site told us to run Windows Update. Which we did - again and again and again. Eventually we gave up in disgust.

So what does this all mean in practice? On a machine that isn't struggling to reach Windows' system requirements we found very little difference between the three browsers, although the variations in memory footprint clearly make a big difference on more modest machines. Remember, though, that these are bare browser installations: start stuffing, say, Firefox with add-ons and its footprint will start expanding accordingly.

Another key consideration is stability. With Firefox, all your open tabs are handled in one go, which means a poorly coded web page or a problem in one tab can bring down the entire browser. With Chrome and IE8, each tab is handled independently. That means a crash in one tab shouldn't affect any other tab - particularly important if you're running web applications for serious work and something silly packs up.

Chrome includes a nifty tab manager (press Shift and Esc to get it) that gives you a view of what each tab's up to, and it enables you to shut down anything that's misbehaving. If you're feeling really geeky, typing "about:memory" in the address bar gives you details not just of the memory being used by each tab, but what kind of memory is being used and what each tab had for breakfast.

Fighting evil
WINNER: IE8. NO, REALLY

Both IE and Chrome have Safari-style private browsing modes, dubbed InPrivate and Incognito respectively. These stop recording your browsing activities so that, ahem, nobody will know about that special present you've been shopping for. Parents will be delighted to discover that Windows' Parental Controls override InPrivate, which will no doubt really annoy teenage boys. With Firefox, private browsing is only via third-party extensions - which is why it loses to IE8 in this category.

It's worth remembering that while InPrivate and Incognito stop sites adding cookies to your system and prevent members of your family from seeing what you've been up to, they don't stop your browser giving away a certain amount of information about you to the sites and search engines you visit. However, while it's tempting to imagine Google using Chrome to secretly spy on you and give the data to its secret army of Terminators, the reality is duller: Chrome doesn't tell Google any more than any other browser does.

All three browsers promise to protect you from net nasties, with anti-phishing warnings popping up automatically. Chrome and IE also use shading in the address bar to show you exactly what domain you're visiting, greying out the bits of the URL that might otherwise obscure the site's origin. It'll be a while before we know how Chrome stacks up on the security front, though, as it's too new for security researchers (and hackers) to have given it a proper poke to look for holes. It's clearly not bulletproof, though: within hours of release, security researcher Aviv Raff found a vulnerability that Chrome has inherited from the Webkit engine it uses.

For many net users, there's another kind of evil to consider: adverts. All three browsers block pop-ups, but that's as far as Chrome goes. Firefox users can install Adblock Plus to get rid of in-page annoyances, while IE8 users can install Adblock Pro. The lack of ad-blocking is enough to rob Chrome of victory here.

TechRadar's final verdict
WINNER: FIREFOX, JUST

None of these browsers is finished, but we've found them stable and useful enough to use as everyday browsers. So which one should be on your machine?

IE8 is the first to fall. It's a vast improvement over IE7 and has some nice touches, but it's too hungry and too slow compared to its rivals (if you can get it to install in the first place. We're still trying to get it onto our laptop). If your machine isn't blessed with lots of RAM and a speedy processor, it's going to annoy you.

The choice between Firefox and Chrome is tougher. For web applications, Chrome is clearly faster - although Firefox's new JavaScript engine isn't far behind it - and its tab management means it should be more stable. Then again there's no ad-blocking, extensions or RSS, and you'll either love or hate its Fisher-Price interface.

For now, we're sticking with Firefox. For all its flaws, it's still the most expandable and customisable of the three, it doesn't look like Baby's First Browser and the ability to block in-page annoyances without having to muck around with proxies more than makes up for the odd crash. Give Chrome extensions, ad-blocking and skins, though, and we may well change our minds.
